Building owners and operators are facing a growing need to cut energy use and lower carbon emissions — Danfoss solutions can help.
In cities like Chicago, large buildings over 250,000 square feet must meet benchmarking requirements that set deadlines for measurable reductions in consumption. For facility owners, this means finding ways to improve efficiency without sacrificing comfort or reliability.
Danfoss has become a trusted partner in meeting these challenges. With advanced pressure independent control valves (PICVs), Danfoss solutions reduce energy waste, simplify operations, and help facilities take real steps toward net zero.
Why Danfoss Matters for Building Owners & Operators
The benefits of Danfoss go beyond solving technical hurdles. Their solutions directly support the long-term goals of today’s building owners:
- Energy reduction through precise flow control
- Efficiency gains that save time and reduce upfront costs
- Alignment with net zero and city benchmarking requirements
- Reliable comfort even in the most demanding climates
Case Study: Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT)
At the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), engineers sought to improve the stability and efficiency of their hydronic HVAC system, which had struggled with pressure fluctuations, temperature swings, and valve “hunting.” These issues not only wasted energy but also created inconsistent comfort levels for building occupants.
To address this, the RIT facilities team replaced a traditional two-way ball valve and manual balancing valve with a Danfoss AB-QM pressure independent control valve on the primary side of a heat exchanger serving a 160,000-square-foot academic building. This setup allowed the team to test how well the AB-QM could maintain constant flow despite changing system pressures.
The results were striking: the AB-QM maintained stable, linear flow across a wide range of pressures, eliminating the system instability typically caused by pressure fluctuations. Even under varying operating conditions, the valve provided precise temperature control with minimal actuator movement. The improved flow stability translated into energy savings, reduced maintenance, and better comfort throughout the building.
Following the success of this installation, RIT now plans to standardize the use of Danfoss AB-QM PICVs across all future new builds and renovation projects.
